Welcome to The Flying 18s, a site dedicated to world 18 footer racing. We trace the international development through the Giltinan Championship history as well as focus on the latest news and people presently upholding the glorious traditions of "The Flying 18s" - "Formula One on Water".
Since the birth of 18 footers on Sydney Harbour in the early 1890s, large spectator fleets have followed the speed, the thrills and the spills of the crazy racing machines they call "The Flying 18s".
The Flying 18s is an online magazine-style site based in Australia and although a supplement to the official www.18footers.com.ausite of the Australian 18 Footers League, it is important that we publish as much international content as possible.
This site will try to put forward the faces and personalities of the competitors and supporters who help make the sport such an ongoing success in an ever-increasing number of world locations.
The Flying 18s has a simple easy to follow format.
By using the menu buttons on the left of the page, you can go directly to the latest news, team information, photo galleries, Giltinan Championship history and galleries, and can link to other 18 footer organisations and supporting websites.
To view the relevant information about any photograph, simply hold the cursor over the image.
While talking of photographs, I would like to thank some of the world's best sailing photographers for providing images so freely to 'The Flying 18s'. (to check their complete galleries check the 'Links' page which will take you directly to their websites).
The 'Contact' page is there for your use. It is important to receive your suggestions and enquiries as this will help keep The Flying 18s up to date on activities throughout the 18 footer world.
